Hovey's History

Hovey's Bear Trap Resort was originally the dream of Charlie Hovey, a man who had a vision of providing comfortable surroundings for his visitors that would draw them back year after year.

In the early 1900's the 13 cabins Charlie put on the property were the top of the line; after all, the cabins had access to a "mineral water" pump, an ice box (outside in the ground) for perishables, plenty of wood and fuel for the woodstoves and a private outhouse for each cabin!

Over the years the successors to Charlie's ownership were Dr. and Mrs. Herman Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Heltman, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Vaughan.  Each owner made updates to the property and cabins, but they all had a vision of maintaining the integrity of the log cabins and the quiet and solitude of the property.  Following the footsteps of our predecessors, our legacy is to preserve the integrity of the log cabins and grounds while providing a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere for our clients.

Six cabins have been "modernized" and are available for your enjoyment - eventually we hope to update the others and make them available for rental enjoyment as well.  Each cabin has it's own unique personality and is furnished with touches of furniture from Charlie Hovey's original concept, or furnished with pieces that have been on property since Charlie handed keys to his first customers.

Picnic tables, charcoal grills and Adirondack chairs are provided with each cabin.  Three fire rings, fire wood and additional chairs are available lakeside for your evening campfires, marshmallow and hot dog roasting.

All cabins have fully equipped kitchens (sink, hot water, gas range, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster and microwave).  Dishes, pots & pans, silverware, glassware and cooking utensils are provided.  All cabins have modern bathrooms with a modular shower, toilet and sink.
